Nathan: The doctor scared you, didn’t he?
Haley: Right about the time he said paralysis.
[Nathan comes and sits next to her on the bench]
H: I was watching you at practice with the team yesterday. You looked so happy. Someone who was doing exactly what they were born to do. You still love it, don’t you?
N: Yeah, I do. And the truth is, I could probably slow down and try to play a little differently-
H: No, you can’t. [She smiles] That’s not who you are, you can’t do that. Can I tell you a secret though? That’s what I love about you. I remember the first time I saw you play, when I was tutoring you. You were like a rock star out there.
N: Masonboro. You sat with Keith, and you were wearing that goofy hat. [They both laugh]
H: Whatever.
N: I scored 35 points that night. And each basket was like my own personal version of a Haley James pickup line.
H: [Smiles] It worked.
N: I played that game for you. And you know what? I’d give it up for you, too. As much as I love playing the game, and the person I am when I play it, I love being a husband and a father more.
